Upper West Side Modern Design

Warm, Modern Design-in-Progress

A Pre-War Pied-a-Terre on West End Avenue

This is a great project to see at this stage, in order to get a sense of the Design Process. One of the first things we do is generate a Floor Plan incorporating new ideas and recommendations of construction, built-ins, furnishings and accessories. We also provide sketches in order to get a feeling of how the space will look with the new elements.

The Couple who own this home travel frequently and wanted a clean and modern design within a pre-war building. We took their ideas and went for a feeling of "Edited Upscale Hotel-Chic."

The Floor Plans are variations on that theme. Furniture is large, comfortable and functional. The space is open and allows for a great flow thoughout the home. Big fluffy rugs delineate areas, and provide great under-foot texture.

The first Plan (left) is a little more playful from above: more shapes and more visual interest, while the second (right) is a bit more serene in feeling. Both Design Options feature furnishings that provide enough spaces for the two of them to relax on a daily basis, but are very flexible in seating for dinners and cocktail parties when friends and family come for a visit!

The Dining Area is most often used for two. Dinners whipped up in the Kitchen (or, ordered in from one of the many restaurants in the neighborhood) are eaten here on a regular basis. Additional seating and an extendable table allow for easy meals for four or more. We integrated a bar into the chunky built-inshelving to allow the Homeowners and their guests to mix up a drink at their whim. Lots more storage for books, glassware and decorative objects makes use of one entire wall in the room.

The Bedrooom has to be the most serene space in the home. The Design Option on the left features a bed upholstered in leather, with mid-century modern nightstands and bedside lamps. A double-drum shade provodes ambient light. The window treatments are linen panels, with a slightly Asian feel. The second Design Option (right) features a simpler upholstered King-Sized bed, and more Asian-inspired nightstands and lamps. A beautiful modern lighting fixture from Peru hangs overhead, and window treatment is balanced a little simpler with a single shade and valance.

The Design Plans and Sketches shown here are a great way to indicate how the Design of the space will look. The Homeowners can pick and choose from these options to create the space that they want to come home to every day. The finished product be a Home designed just for them!
